Cockapoos 101

Crossbred group

For many decades if not much, much longer, crossing Spaniels with Poodles has produced generations of friendly and family-focused companions. Of these dogs, the Cockapoo – typically a cross between a Poodle and an American or English Cocker Spaniel – is one of the oldest varieties of these popular mixes.

What we love about Cockapoos

Popular breed is one of the oldest of the "oodles."

As with other Poodle crosses, the color and coat texture of the Cockapoo varies. The intelligence, loving nature and desire to please usually does not. The Cockapoo is merry, playful and quick to learn. They can adapt easily to city or suburban life, and into families as diverse as empty nesters, singles and those with young children. They get along well with other family pets as well. Cockapoos may also be more easily tolerated by those with allergies.

Is it possible that the first famous crossbred – the Cockapoo – was an accident? Some think so, but since the good-natured family dog first became noticed in the 1960s, we’ll probably never know. What is for certain: The sweetness of a Spaniel and the intelligence of a Poodle make for a wonderful combination that has been duplicated in other kinds of Poodle mixes since.

Cockapoo coat care and colors

The coats of Cockapoos vary in color, pattern and texture. Because they often need regular, professional grooming, it’s important to start Cockapoos as puppies so they can learn to tolerate being bathed, dried, and clipped short. Between spa sessions, combing is more important than brushing to get down to the skin and prevent matting. Acclimating puppies to having their feet handled and nails clipped or ground down is key to making future nail trims easier on everyone.
