Weimaraners 101

Sporting group

An intelligent and athletic breed that comes in a singularly distinctive silver color, the Weimaraner is a good match with active families. The breed is eager to please and easy to train, and they are devoted to their families.

They are a high-energy breed, and they need as much daily, heart-thumping exercise as they can get. And then they’d like to get some more. Without daily, vigorous exercise of their minds and bodies, Weims will find other, potentially problematic, outlets for their energy. Weimaraners are good with children, friendly to guests, and usually compatible with other family pets.

What we love about Weimaraners

While they jump at any chance of an outing, they are a short-coated breed that doesn’t tolerate bitter cold well. Fortunately, they look very sharp in a well-tailored dog coat.

It’s almost impossible to mention the Weimaraner without a nod to William Wegman, the artist who built a career with carefully staged images of his dogs. In 2018, Wegman’s Weims were immortalized in mosaics, in an art installation that now graces the walls of the New York subway’s 23rd Street station. The 11 panels feature Wegman’s Flo and Topper dressed like everyday New Yorkers.

Weimaraner coat care and colors

The Weimaraner’s coat is easy to care for: Sleek and short, all it needs is weekly brushing and an occasional bath to keep it in perfect condition. It’s even easy to remember what recognized colors the breed comes in: A single solid, sleek, and eye-catching silvery-gray. The Weimaraner is a large dog, and that means large nails that need to be kept short. Avoid wrestling matches with adult dogs by acclimating puppies to having their feet handled and nails clipped. Some dogs better tolerate nail grinding rather than trimming, so experiment with which method works best. As with other drop-eared dogs, regular ear cleaning will help keep infections at bay.

Weimaraner exercise & training

Full speed ahead

Exercise level

Keeping the Weimaraner exercised helps avoid boredom and, possibly, destructiveness. An ideal running partner, this breed needs strenuous exercise daily.

Trainability

Strenuous, regular exercise is the best tool to help the high-drive Weimaraner focus on learning good manners. Reward good behavior with praise and tiny treats.
